Yee to the Haw

It's Farmhouse Friday, girls!
Lots of links to play in at LaurieAnna's, go see!

This enamelware plate is a new-to-me piece.
I'm smitten.
It evokes thoughts of biscuits and milk
gravy...chicken fried in lard...not precut
chicken either...a whole one that got
divided at the chopping block,
leg by leg by wing by thigh.

The kind of chicken that makes you
wait. The frying goes on for an eternity...
lid on, now lid off...getting crispier by
the second.
Anticipation is golden.

Daddy teases the kids that Mama
has made a chocolate meringue pie
and it's hiding in the dining room.
Mama slaps Daddy playfully on the arm
as he doubles over in delight at having
gotten her goat again.

Not so funny though, when Daddy
later, falls asleep in his recliner and
tilts back sooo far that he would
have hit the floor if Mama in her
peripherals hadn't noticed and
caught him by the big toe only,
guiding him and his chair back
to the floor.
What was so hysterical about a man
about to hit his head?

When it happened a second time,
nobody let out a whimper so as
not to put salt in the tender place.
Anyway, Carol Burnett was on
and we could laugh at her plenty
which wouldn't be at the expense
of anyone in the family.
And it was a good night even
though there was no pie.

Daddy was a meat cutter at a local
butcher shop before he married
my mother.
He always knew cuts of beef
and what were the best prices
in the sale papers.

He was mighty thin in those days!
Awesome daddy.
